WEATHER STAYS GLORIOUS AS COMPETITORS TAKE TO THE WATER

London Triathlon 2006, our best yet!
21.08.06

Despite the heavy rains in the lead up to the triathlon, the weather was beautifully sunny, and the atmosphere was buzzing as the competitors gathered, making final preparations before their chosen event began.

Over 100 people took to the water for the specially arranged BELRON start at 3.00pm. As temperatures soared, competitors endured the tough conditions as they had to swim, cycle and run the course to completion.

Making this the fifth year that BELRON has taken part in this annual event, competitors began their preparation as early as the Triathlon 2005, holding charity events and training hard, ready to take on the course and better their times from last year.

Although we won't know the final figure for a few months yet, we are already on course to smash our record €240,000 that we raised last year. The money we raise goes to MaAfrika Tikkun, who use it to help the communities of Orange Farm, Diepsloot and Alexandra on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa.

During a special evening event, awards were presented to the winner of each category, and certificates were given to the co-coordinators for the time, effort and hard work they have all put into the event. Special recognition was also given to the following people:

  • Jim Leydon, who completed the Olympic individual, had an operation on his leg in February and had not practiced running until the event.
  • Stephano Montagner competed as part of a team two years ago and then last year completed the sprint individual having learnt to swim only 5 weeks before the Triathlon.  This year he pushed himself even further and completed the Olympic individual.
  • Rich Harrison from USA has taken part in the Triathlon as an Olympic individual for the past five years.

Gary Lubner was also presented with cheques of sponsorship money totalling €30,000 from CARGLASS - France, €20,000 from CARGLASS - Belgium and €9,223 from CARGLASS - The Netherlands.

The whole event was a huge success - thank you to everyone that competed in the Triathlon and donated money for MaAfrika Tikkun.
