THE CHARITY

BELRON, through MaAfrika Tikkun, has been supporting the Orange Farm community for over six years. The Orange Farm is a settlement about 40km south of Johannesburg. 350,000 families live there in a community plagued with poverty, a high rate of unemployment, violence and lack of infrastructure.

In Orange Farm the incidence of HIV/AIDS is alarming, resulting in increasing numbers of orphans and child-headed families. Rape and abuse of young children is on the increase and death has become a norm in the area. The situation in Orange Farm, Diepsloot and Alexandra is desperate.

The money we raise in 2008 will enable Belron to provide the following:

Providing support for new projects such as focussing on the youth by setting up after school projects
Provide facilities for the new Creche
Provide 3 teachers
Full training programme for the teachers
Daily food for the crèche housing 30 - 50 children per day
Blankets and clothing for the children
Educational materials for the crèche
Food parcels for community teachers

Caregivers Activities

120 caregivers to provide home base care. Caregivers will receive a monthly stipend (like a salary) for a period of one year, whereas before they received no money at all, only food parcels. They will be provided with medical kits; foods parcels and will continuously upgrade their skills in order to benefit their community.

Aids orphans are fed each day – we have literally saved lives.  This year the money will not only help with this struggle against hunger but will also ensure that the children receive improved health care, education and the chance of a better future.

This year we are asking each individual competitor to raise a minimum of €350 and each team to raise a minimum of €750.  All the money we raise will help to improve the situation in Orange Farm but will also help us to focus on two additional areas - the townships of Diepsloot and Alexandra.

MaAfrika Tikkun is an organisation that assists disadvantaged and impoverished communities in South Africa.  Amongst other things, they focus on primary health care, preschool education, skills training and care for the elderly, all of which are particular fields of expertise.  They create community centres enabling them to combine all of these services under one roof.  These facilities provide a centre of focus from which people can receive better care, education and ultimately the chance of a more enriched life.

All the above is available in an information leaflet part 1 & part 2  which you can download and print out.
