Afrika Tikkun

 Each year Belron® employees take part in the London Triathlon to raise money for Afrika Tikkun.

Afrika Tikkun is a charitable organisation based in South Africa whose approach is to transform and uplift impoverished communities by focussing on orphans and vulnerable children and equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in life.  They do this through a broad range of child development programmes run from community centres in the townships.
By working with leaders within the communities and training local community members to deliver the programmes Afrika Tikkun ensures that ownership and skills remain in the community thereby ensuring long term impact and stability.

Over the years Belron® has donated over £2Million to Afrika Tikkun.  The funds have supported programmes in three communities around the Johannesburg region: Orange Farm, Diepsloot and Alexandra.  More than 800,000 families live in these communities which are plagued with poverty, a high rate of unemployment, violence and lack of infrastructure.
Funding from Belron® has enabled Afrika Tikkun to build community centres in these townships and provide a wide range of programmes for children and their families ranging from home based care, feeding programmes, pre-schools, after-school activities, life skills training and emergency relief.  Our support has equipped vulnerable children and young people to see a way out of their impoverished situation by give them hope for their future.

This year we have chosen to support the programmes aimed at school going children and youth (children aged 6-19). 

Young people are at the forefront of the government’s agenda for development in South Africa. 
These children are increasingly at risk due to critical social issues on the streets such as drugs,
teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, HIV/AIDS, violence and crime.  Afrika Tikkun is providing
after-school activities aimed at keeping kids off the streets, educating them about these issues
and encouraging them to make a stand against them. 

Over 3,000 children are enrolled in their programmes across five townships.  In this way Afrika Tikkun believes it can play a vital role in helping South Africa to lift itself out of a spiral of poverty and disease.
